how do i determine what soundcard i have?

    Try posting as an attachment the diagnostic result from running Everest, and someone might be able to answer your question :)

    You have onboard sound chip, which is built into the motherboard opposed to an actual PCI sound card.

    the Sound Chip is this Analog Devices SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

    As you have a Compaq pc, the best way to get the most compatible driver if you need one is to visit Compaq/HP support and enter the model name and version of your PC into the search box.

    If you can supply the Model and Version name no doubt one of us will assist you in locating them.

    Yes the generic Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver would do fine, wouldnt be as good as having the actual specific driver, but looking at fidel's log from everest the Soundmax driver looks installed fine.. so guess he/she wanted to know the actual make over having a problem with it.

    If you explain whats not working, we could then help you?

    Any error messages?
    if so what are they and what are you doing at the time for them to appear, can you recreate them.

    Is it no sound?
    if no sound then, what is the Make and Model number/version of your Compaq, and we should be able to find comapatable drivers

    Are your speakers working ok?
    Is your sound muted? ( check Control Panel > Sounds and Devices > and under Volume tab click Advanced and are any ticked muted )


    the more info you give us the better.

    Fidel, go HERE and put in the computers name and model, as suggested earlier by Halo.

    There should be a sticker on the unit that tells you what model Presario it is.

    That page will give you drivers and software.


    I also suggest you turn up your monitors refresh rate. It's only on 60Hz at the moment, which causes eye strain.

    75 up is much better if your monitor supports it. (right-click an empty part of your desktop, then properties, Settings tab, advanced, then Monitor tab)

    Make sure you have checked "hide rates this monitor can't display".

    its a presario 5423US

    i checked volume control..and actually my speakers arent highlighted..its as if my pc isnt detecting my speakers or sound

    You didn't bother reading or trying any suggestions. (including adjusting your resolution)

    Put your model number in the link I supplied, then choose your operating system, in your case XP.

    That brings you to THIS page, which contains all drivers available, including sound/audio.

    this is for a Dell System, but that brand should make no difference as the audio card manufacturer is the same

    This driver is for Win XP Home / Pro

    Also chk in BIOS if the Integrated Audio is enabled

    Also Chk in Device manager if the Analog Devices, Audio Codec's have an Question Mark or Exclamation Mark

    nothing has a question mark by it...how do i check the BIOS? to see if my sound card is enable?..f10 f12 what?

    Have you checked everything in Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel?

    Do you get any sound from the Speakers at all?

    Good Point Insomniac !

    Chk in the Sound Properties and see if the Default Play Back devices is set to Sound Max or Analog Devices !!!

    Enter BIOS and See if Integrated Audio is Enabled

    In you System Presario 5423US When the first screen appears, press F1 to enter the BIOS Setup
