    I am a writer, feverishly working on developing new technologies not yet even dreamed of by the scientific community...

    After I deleted my ceilings.. unrestricted new thought was suddenly easy to process... it just flows, like it's happy to be given life...

    ...I might be working in the yard, when I get a fabulous new idea addition to one of my projects.. I rush to the computer, which might be off... and up comes that irritating windows splash screen.. so blatant and aggressively violent to the psyche, that just seeing it while holding a distant new concept intact, crashes some of the new thought-sequence, before I can get the chance to begin to key it... I must kill that horrid splash-screen!.. Or shoot the computer, and go back to pen and paper...

    What must I do to this Compaq desktop, (600mghtz, 6gig, 128R, W98se), to replace the Windows startup and shut down splash screens, with pix of my own choosing?..

    Those splash screens are like someone nasty pouring a pail of cold water down your back while you are making love.. get my drift..? Get the hang of it..?
    Writing new scientific-territory is in a sense, like "making love with thought"... "Splash" is a real fitting label for those nasty inconsiderate persistent blasts of slap right in your face advertising.. a very close parallel, to some vile brat kid, tossing water balloons, and/or peeing on people on the street below, from atop a car-park building...

    I just gotta get rid of those thht, compaq & windows, splash-screens... even if it means I gotta rip out a chip, and install a custom charged one...

    I'm guessin' that my best option is to go Linux..? but that's not an option right now.. cuz I'm broke, and cuz it'll probably take a whole year's larnin' to just catch onto Linux basics...

    Monster... Hi ya...
    You can do as you ask.

    Now... to simply remove said startup screen.
    Find the file "MSDOS.SYS" within the root directory. ( C: )
    Then open with Notepad.

    You'll see this:

    [Paths]
    WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
    WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
    HostWinBootDrv=C

    [Options]
    BootMulti=1
    BootGUI=1
    ;
    ;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
    ;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxa
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxb
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxc
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxd
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxe
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxf
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxg
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxh
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxj
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxk
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxm
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxn
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxo
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxp
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxq
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxr
    ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxs
    AutoScan=1
    WinVer=4.90.3000

    Under the entree "BootGUI=1"...
    type in Logo=0
    then "Save as"... "All file types" MSDOS.SYS

    To change the screen:
    The startup logo "splash" screen name in windows 98se is "LOGOW.SYS"
    You'll find it in "C:\WINDOWS
    This is actually a BMP file size 320X400.
    Make a bitmap file of the proper size...
    Rename it LOGOW.SYS, rename the old LOGOW.SYS to LOGOW.OLD and put the new file in its place.
    You should see the logo has changed.
    But note that it might take more to change the "Compaq" startup screen also.
    Try these first and see.
    With the methods written above you can reverse the changes.
