For instance, I've had AOL on my PC for a long time...but now I use IE and I don't need AOL. Everytime I try to uninstall AOL with the control pannel...it doesn't work.

Furthermore I know that I have a TON of old programs that simply don't show up on the "Add or Delete Programs" menu. How do I get rid of them?

Another way to delete programs is to use CCleaner.

    CCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191

Click on the Tools tab, on the left hand side.
This will list programs that can be deleted via CCleaner.

If they are NOT on there either, I would suggest going to Windows Explorer, open up Program Files (If that is where you install programs by default), right click on the program you wish to delete, and delete it. This is usually a last resort.

The reason lots of programs are not listed in the Add/Delete lists is usually because the program has not added anything to the Registry, (commonly called No install programs), thus the Add/Delete does not track them.
I stand to be corrected on this, but it is my experience.;)

After you have deleted all you want to, run CCleaner again clicking on Cleaner and Issues tabs to clean out any residuals.

Make sure you allow CCleaner to make a partial Registry backup when it asks you.
