I have a Dell Inspiron and my monitor broke (don't ask). The monitor port for the notebook is a typical monitor port and I am trying to link it to an LCD TV/monitor which appears to have a PS/2 like port for s-video. Do I need an adapter or is there a cable I can buy with the different connectors at each end? Or can I even do it at all?

    Thanks
    Patrick

I have a Video out (your port) to AV and apparently I can hook a tv into that, somehow.
    It's a small cable, about 10cm long and I'm sure they're cheap.

Does anyone know if you can even connect a notebook to an LCD S-video with just a cable or do I need a converter?

Well, as long as its a S-Video out and a S-Video in, then yes you just need a straightforward cable. :)

On some TV's you will need to enable S-Video port, on mine this is done running the on screen setup.
On my TV, I have S-Video channel which is not accesible with the remote, you have to manually change the channel to it, it is before channel 1.
"The above may not apply to your LCD TV, I have tube type TV, but something to check"

Another note turn off both TV & Laptop or PC when connecting S-Video cable.
    Once connected then power up.

It looked to me as though he has a standard vga out for a duel monitor setup on his laptop and is tryin to plug it into an svideo on his monitor on gfx cards they have that little converter box thingy which he will need an external version, could be wrong.

Thanks for all of the input. Since the last time I checked in I did realize that my notebook does have an s-video out port. I connected it to the LCD with an s-video cable and the TV displayed the outpu tfrom the computer for about 2 seconds during startup and then would not do so after. I have been through Control Panel display settings a million times trying to figure out how to enable my s-video port to transmit to the LCD TV with no luck.

So that is where I am at at this point. Any new suggestions?

usually you would have to set your TV as the primary monitor in your graphics cards display settings ... which would mean you would have to have a display ... it all depends on your graphics card ... it might be easier if you were to plug in a CRT monitor and your TV at the same time just to configure it .. what graphics card are you using BTW?

With the help of my Fujitsu help line I worked this out.

When my screen went out on my laptop, I was able to hook up the laptop to the TV with a S-video cable (13 feet from Radio Shack). Using a flashlight on the LED screen, I left clicked my screen to get the Properties field. Then settings, advanced. I was able to select the TV screen and send the signal there. The tv had to be on "Side Video" which was where I hooked up the S video cable. Hope this helps.

Hook up your tv and computer with your s Video cable. Hit start, controll panel, devices, tv, apply. This should get you going.

If you have a newer tv, make sure your mode or setting is turned to where the cable is hooked up. Such as side video for my tv.
