How do I install a second DVD burner?

I recently bought a new gateway PC with Vista Home premium. I have some old videos that I'd like to copy, and can't seem to do it. What I'm trying to copy is a DVD that a is already a copy. I tried dragging the files to my desktop, then Windows DVD burner, but it says some files are not recognized, and I just can't seem to burn a working copy.
So I decided to install a second DVD burner that was in my old PC, thinking that maybe I could copy directly from one dvd to another. Now the PC recognizes it in place of the original, but no second DVD burner shows up in my computer.
When I put a dvd into the original now, nothing happens.
How do I get both to show up and be usable?
    Thanks

What burning software is on the Vista computer?
Usually when you launch something like Nero or Roxio, you are given a choice to copy a DVD. It lets you select both the source (where the original is located) and the target (where the blank is located) using dropdown boxes.
You can also make a copy of a DVD using the above software and a computer with only one burner. I do it all the time in my notebook. First the source is put in and the computer copies everything to a temporary spot in the computer. When it is done copying, it instructs you to insert the blank. You do and it will start burning.

How do you have the 2 drives hooked up? Are they IDE drives? If they are IDE drives, do you have the jumpers for Master and Slave set up right?

OK, now after about 4 restarts, both burners show up in my computer. I installed nero v5.5.10.26, now when I open it I get "please ask your administrator to install nero burn rights". What's that all about? I had it installed on my old PC and never had to do that. If I just click ok it takes me to Nero where it asks which recorder would I like to use but I have only one choice- image recorder[cd-r/rw]. I then click on copy entire disk, and it takes me to another window where I'm ask "source drive", but it's blank, destination drive says image recorder[cd-r/rw].So apparently Nero doesn't know I have 2 burners, or I really do need to download and install Nero burn rights, even for me to use it.
I'm new to vista (came from ME) and am still learning it, is there a way to turn off this administrator stuff? I'm the only one who uses this thing.
Is there a good freeware DVD burner you could recommend?
    Thanks

I've been messing with this for hours now and am getting nowhere. When i try to use DVD shrink, I get
    "failed to read file"E:\"
The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid"
I get this on every disk I try to copy, any idea what's going on here? This was easy on my old machine.

Alright, here's what i found, the burner doesn't work, neither one. I can believe that the new one is possibly defective, but my old one worked perfectly in the old PC. I try to burn a music cd in Nero and everything goes as it should and it shows the burn progress and then says the cd is complete, but when I try to open it, there's nothing there. I find it hard to believe that both are bad, could it be a software problem? Any suggestions on how to test it.
When I found that I couldn't burn with the new burner, i disconnected it and connected my old one and tried again, with the same results, it says it's burning but there's nothing on the cd. They will both play a dvd and music cd just fine, they just won't burn either a CD or DVD.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Here's how I test a CD or DVD burner: I go into Notepad and create a small text file; I type the alphabet or whatever. I save it to the desktop. Then using whatever burning software, I burn the text file (try to use an RW disc so you don't end up with an entire disc wasted with a 5k text file). Then I put the CD in a different PC and see if the text file is the same as how I typed it. Easy. I'm also thinking that Nero 5.5 is too old for Vista, but Vista has built-in DVD burning (which I've never been able to get working right). For burning a DVD video try using BurnAware or create an ISO image of the disc you want to copy, then burn the image to the blank. Use ISORecorder to create an image (or Nero, or CDBurnerXP, or whatever), then use ImgBurn (or Nero, or CDBurnerXP, or BurnAware) to burn the resulting ISO. There's many ways to skin the proverbial cat... Here's links:

All the above programs are free to download and use. I've used 'em all, they all are top notch!

Thanks dlb I dled CD burner xp and it worked. I feel a bit like an idiot trying to use an old version of nero with Vista, but in my defense, the vista burner wouldn't work either, but I guess that's to be expected.:)
I still can't copy this burned movie though I get-
file warning [J:\video_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB could not read file (System-23).]
The movie plays fine, but I just can't copy it.
I'm also going to dl the others you suggested and try them.
Thanks so much for your help everyone, Major Geeks always comes through.
