Good morning Geeks, I am running XP Home SP3
I want to install a software app on an external hard drive, but the windows install package defaults to the C drive. The apps support forum says that to install on a drive other than the default to use the /DIR parameter. I have the command line I believe that I want to use, but how and when do I get there in DOS?

    EmsisoftAntiMalware6Setup.exe /DIR="I:\Programs\EAM"

All Windows apps are best installed in the Windows partition, so do you mind if I ask why you want to install it somewhere else? Also, do you have any other AV program installed and running?

    Hi,

    Where did you download EmsisoftAntiMalware6Setup.exe?

Let's assume that it's on your desktop (if it isn't, copy it there using Windows Explorer - you can delete it after the installation is complete), and that your Windows login name is keni254. Replace keni254 in each step below with your Windows login name.

    1. Open a CMD prompt:

Click Start, Run, and then type CMD and press Enter.

This will put you at a CMD prompt.

    2. Change to the desktop directory:

Type: CD "C:\Documents and Settings\keni254\Desktop\" and press Enter.

The prompt should now read: C:\Documents and Settings\keni254\Desktop>

    3. Type: EmsisoftAntiMalware6Setup.exe /DIR="I:\Programs\EAM" and press Enter.

The setup should start, and, assuming that the DIR parameter that you gave is correct, it should install the program in that directory on that drive.

Once the installation is complete, test it to be sure that it runs properly.

To close the CMD window, switch back to it and type: exit and press Enter.

    Regards,

    dj

This app is a virus/malware app. It is not good to have more than one of these on the primary drive, they conflict with each other. No virus app is 100% effective so I consider it good practice to weekly scan with a second of third virus app. The "I" drive is a switched external hard drive that is on only when I turn it on so there is no conflict between virus apps. When I use it I disable my primary virus app.

Yep, understand and agree with most of that. It's just that most ppl use a non-resident AV app for that purpose, such as MBAM and/or SAS. Then there's no need to fiddle about disabling the primary AV before scanning. Also, it doesn't make an atom of difference which drive an AV program is is installed on - if both run at the same time there will probably be a conflict.

So I could go ahead and install on C, make sure there are no start-up features enabled, and set services to manual, then it would run only when I called for it?

I wouldn't go that far. What I'm saying is that you should not install two resident AVs at all, regardless of which drives you are installing to. Use an 'on demand' AV scanner if you want a second opinion.

    Thanks dj
Emisoft was downloaded from their web site. This is the new name for the previous a-squared software. I use it as a backup scanner because it seems to find Trojans that other scanners over look. The previous versions installed per standards, but this latest update v6 seems to short cut and assumes a default install.
