My goal is to: 1) take an external hard drive (Maxtor 320 gigs) out of its case, 2) install it as the main drive in my Dell desktop, 3)

:-o Continuation of first post in the thread...

    3) use the current main hard drive (75 gigs) as a selective backup after, 4) transferring its contents (everything on my computer now) to the new main hard drive.

The goal is to have a new hard drive with greater capacity (320 gigs) than the current hard drive (75 gigs) and to use the smaller (75 gig) hard drive to selectively backup critical folders/files.

Thanks to anyone who can help me if this makes sense. :wave

:) Thanks so much for your reply. I will be doing it in the next several weeks and probably will have questions as progressing... :wave

If your Dell has a hidden recovery partition, it might not be as easy as it sounds.
What is the make and model of your Dell?

Could there possibly be problems with the Maxtor connecting as an internal?
    Never disassembled an external,myself.
