Just have to add you will need to get a router be that standalone or one with built in ADSL/Cable modem/Router with more than 1 ethernet port if you are going to connect more than 1 PC via ethernet, many come with 1/4/8 ports as well as wireless.

This is the one I have for ADSL/Wireless and 4 ethernet ports.
    http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/h_wirelessrouter_dg834g.php

but if you have cable interent then you will need a cable router ( this one does both Cable and ADSL + 4 Ports )

ADSL2+ Modem, Internet-sharing Router, 4-port Switch and Wireless-G Access Point with SpeedBooster Performance Enhancement; With advanced firewall and wireless security

Yes you can connect 4 computers to that router with network cables. Its an ADSL router though you need to be sure your internet is adsl and not cable.

lol k , how do i know if it adsl or cable?

  15. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

Check with your internet service provider.

Does your internet come down the phone line (adsl)? or via a co-ax tv arial type cable (cable)

  19. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

Ok as far as I know NTL are a cable company. Just to be sure please ring them and check compatability of the router before you buy it.

COntact details for the can be found on their website.

so cant i use that router then?

  21. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

I didn't say that. But the probability is that you CANNOT. but as I said in my previous post: since you are not sure whther you have cable or ADSL you need to contact your provider and find out before I can give you a definate answer on that.

ok, but on the link u gave me just then it says that broadband is a cable modem.

so does that meen that it is cable?

  23. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

Yes that probably does means its cable and as such you will probably need a cable router.

Thats a cable router but it doesn't seem to have any wired ports.

this one is a linksys router that has everything you need and in my opinion is better than the belkin one.

    ok now:

    1. i gather this is the part that means it is a cable router..
    'DSL Connection for Cable Customer'

    2. but what bit on that link says that it has ports?

  29. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, files, and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space

o yes, ok i see wer u hav that from, so the ports r on the back of the box?,

  33. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

On that particular model they are on the back yes. They will be numbered 1 thorugh 4. Ther will be a 5th ports labeled WAN which is where you connect your cable modem.

  39. matt.chugg

Do you have a local computer shop you oculd go into ? The chance are they can make you a cable to the length you require and it will be much cheaper than PC World

  46. Anon-125cdb8a9b

    Anon-125cdb8a9b Anonymized

ok then, for example, say i get a 5m cable and a 1m cable to make a distance of 6m which is what i need (example) how do i join them?, so that the connection can travel through that 5m and 1m of wire?

  47. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

    WHAT ?

the 1m cable you get with the router is to connect the router to the cable modem. if you need a 6 metre cable to go from a computer to the router just buy a 6 metre cable. why would you even consider buying a 1m and a 5m to make a 6m cable ?

  48. Anon-125cdb8a9b

    Anon-125cdb8a9b Anonymized

    no, ok:

    1. 1m metre cable that comes with the router connects router to internet modem. yes?

    2. if i get another 1m cable i can connect computer 1 (which is next to the modem) to the router with ease. yes?

    3. i can get a longer (dont no how long) piece of cable and connect it from the router to the computer 2 (which is in another room). yes?

    4. SO, the router is now completely set up. yes?
or do i hav to install a piece of software on both computers before i can use the web on both?

  49. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

    yes

    yes

    yes

    no

You will need to setup some settings on your computer and on the router but you won't need and specific software for that. I suggest you contact your isp for help with this
