I have downloaded a boating chart to my desktop....however, I cannot open it. When I try to open it, up comes a box with another file and I open it. I then get several boxes that I need to know how the item was created in order to open it.

Why can't I just dbl click this new download and it will open?

By the way, it is in a zipped format. However, when I extract it...it stil does the same as the above description.

    Hope you can help.

What's in the .zip folder (filename/s and extension/s), or what happens if you extract it?

When I extract it...I get exactly the same stuff in the file as was in the zip file (but it is now a regular file).

Here is a link that might help you, http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/staff/faq.htm#display

I use the NOAA website quite often checking historical data but have never downloaded any charts. From what I could find it looks like you may need a special viewer (software) to use the file, http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/mcd/enc/resource.htm

    Oh well.....I give up.

I have Adobe Reader and that doesn't work either.

I'm spending way too much time on this...I will go out and but a paper chart.

All we needed to know was the filename/s and extension/s of the zip containers contents..............

Hi, if it's S57 then I have found that the "opencpn" program (opencpn.org) will view it nicely, is available for Linux (a .deb for Ubuntu is available, plus the source code) but its program is quite slow. But it definitely works and gives all the detail on the charts.

    Cheers,

    Charles.
