How do I remove an XP service?

I've posted a request for help at this thread:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=969679&postcount=1531

but so far no takers. I need to either remove this service (client version 5.0 folding@home) from my computer or get it fixed, at this point I don't really care. If I get it removed I'll probably start over and try again, only ask more questions from the beginning.

I am a beginner on XP, so I'm probably missing more than one thing that is considered simple by other folks. Any help is appriciated. Thanks.

It should be found in add and remove (start, control panel, add and remove programs, and this is the best place to uninstall.
Otherwise, you can stop it starting, to enable removal, if it is stubborn.

    To stop services, you can
Right click My Computer, click manage, services and applications, services, and you will see services running, and you can double click a service to bring up a little box where you can disable, put on automatic, stop, and start whatever. If using it, I would advise caution, and write down what any service setting is, before you change it.
As you say you are a beginner with XP, I advise you to look at the viper download, and store a copy for future reference.

Otherwise, if that does not help, you will have to delete the folder when you find it (in search, all files, folders). Then,
To delete the registry key, click START->RUN->"regedit"- First back up (export) the registry to a folder in My Documents, so that you can find it, if needed.
and locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\folding at home- and delete it and all the keys attached to it.

Just remember to back up any data you treasure, before editing the Registry -

Just as an aside, are you running a firewall or any other security than AVG?

And knowing if you have a firewall is also relevant to what you posted about because you may have a conflict between that and Folding.

sc delete servicename at the command prompt will allow you to delete a service.

...or got to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ Administrative Tools/ Component Services/ Services and fool around in there though fool around is not the exact term I want to use.

This will stop the service, but not remove it.

Here is my task manager, which service do I remove?

    sc delete FahCore_78.exe

This is the exact format for the command?

    Thanks guys.

    I get the following error:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

    An other ideas?

You need to type in the service name into that command, not the exectuable name. Unless its hidden, msconfig will show the name under the services tab.

Put a check in hide MS services to make it easy to see.

From scouring the web, I hope this might help
Spybot search and destroy had a link to gmer (program)
If you look at the two links, it could be a tool to find and get rid of it, if removing the folder (as I said earlier) was not in your book
    http://www.gmer.net/index.php

    http://www.gmer.net/faq.php

Also, I lost the link, but temporaily copied this,
FahCore_78.exe is located in a subfolder of "C:\Program Files" or sometimes in a subfolder of C:\Windows or in the folder C:\Windows\System32 or in a subfolder of C:\ or in a subfolder of "C:\Documents and Settings". Known file sizes on Windows XP are 2322432 bytes (69% of all occurrence), 2293760 bytes, 2338816 bytes.
The process has no file description. The program is not visible. The file is not a Windows core file.

OK, I'm missing something basic here. One side note, I figured out what I was doing wrong with F@H, I can now get the client to work, but I want to reinstall it correctly, which means I have to uninstall it first.

Looking at MSCONFIG (shown below) I get the following service name (I know, I messed up)...

    FAH@C:+Documents and Settings+Bill Marsden+Local Settings+Temporary Internet Files+Content.IE5+7S5E5EBF+FAH504-Console[1].exe

So I type the name as shown in the prompt using cutnpaste and get the following return on the COMMAND PROMPT shown below.

What am I doing wrong? I'm sure it is both simple and basic (and maybe stupid).

Before I run GMR I want to make sure I understand what I'm doing. I wonder if HighJack This would help? I've boldly gone into my registry with Win98SE, for some reason I'm having trouble wrapping my head around XP. I still don't know what a service is, when I get the time I'll research it.

    Thanks guys.

    * Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    * On the page that opens, scroll down to what ever you want to stop...
    * then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    * When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    * Click OK until you get back to Windows.

Success! The quotes did the trick, it came back with

The Service has been successfully removed.

Or words very close to that effect. Now to reinstall F@H. Goldie gave good instructions, but until you're fought a computer a lot of things don't really make sense.

During the course of my travels I figured out how to disable it, but I wanted the sucker gone, dagnabit!

    Thanks for the help guys.
