I was watching TV it shows how the cops can get your IP address and information on your ISP and also do a internet packet trace.

First how do they do it and what programs do they use and can anyone do it? When I go to a message boards ,chat rooms ,groups ,web sites ,blogs or just reading my e-mail and checking web sites I see no IP address or internet packet .

I was just thinking if they can do it can anyone do it? The NSA claims to be able to monitor e-mail ,cell phone ,lan line phone ,internet use ,radio use so on.The NSA claim to be able to brake simple encryption too and where monitoring the USSR.

How do they do it and can anyone do it?

If you have a static IP like I do for my cable modem with VOIP, your ip address is as good as your home address. Think dialing 911 - they can resolve that ip to my address and dispatch help. That is becasue the ISP keeps my phone number associated to my IP & to my billing address.
Another service that takes advantage of this is lojack by Computrace.

It is easy to get an IP address, then with whois and other tools find the ISP, but you have to suponea the ISP for the customer's info after that.
I read that several ISPs are not keeping records anymore so the RIAA, etc. can't have the info.

You will not see your IP, it is 'stamped' on packets the leave your PC so the responce know where it came from and the info requested goes back to. Like mailing a letter. With a packet sniffer you'll find it.

you can kind of simulate it using wireshark on your own computer. try to capture some http packets. If you look around at the captured packets, you can find info on what websites people on your network(you, in this case) are going to.
Its one of the ways i monitor my network at work. I'll run wireshark on my firewall during peak hours to see what sites people are going to. my blocklist gets longer by the week it seems.

Obviously, it's not going to be this simple if we're talking about the internet.

Ya but I don't see my IP address here or anyone IP address here. But the computer geeks and cops can see it !! What tool do they use or do they use DOS.

I thought whois looks up demain names like yahoo or google and you can get the IP address ,phone number ,building address, and other info.

What are packet sniffers and can you get this at the DOS prompt or control panel?

How can you find out how much bathwith is used?

Your IP is going to be on the server side of things. You wont see it on a forum at your end.

a packet sniffer is a tool like wireshark that i mentioned in my last post. windows doesnt have a built in packet sniffer that im aware of.

http://majorgeeks.com/Wireshark_d4449.html - link to wireshark download if youre interested in checking it out.

basically when you run wireshark, itll document all traffic going through with network card. Then you can analyze the packets to see whats been going on in your network. nice little tool when you learn how to use it and what to look for in the packets it sniffs out.

So what software do you need to see the IP address or can see it in windows?

yeah, if you want to see your own IP address, you can go start - run - type cmd - hit enter. command prompt will pop up. type ipconfig - hit enter and youll be able to see your private ip address.
google "what is my ip" and click the first link on google. youll be able to see your public ip

You right most message boards ,chat rooms ,groups ,web sites ,blogs do not show the IP address but just because you see no IP address or web master at majorgeeks does not show the IP address for every post here does not mean the cops or security experts cannot use program to get IP address .

I believe zone alarm pro can long port scans and show the IP address and do trace of IP address and show the address of hacker trying get in.Well that is what hackers do they put special trojans that you download and scan you computer for open ports.I believe zone alarm pro can show alot more than the other zone alarm .

I know yahoo e-mail under the advance tab shows the IP address and all the routers the data gone to.

It just like cell towers the 911 will do cell trace to find out what cell tower you cellphone is coming off.

Basically every time you go to ANY site your recorded some way or another in the internet traffic. I was staff of a game I played while back.. On forums for staff and owner you were able to see IP of the people on forums.. And also while in game.. For whatever reason it was there, something small was if someone cheated or bug abused, they got banned so you banned there IP. Then they go into proxy and so on.. BUT no need for that. Also yes the internet police is out there. And they can do whatever they want. Remember its not the actually police.. Its the big boys/girls that do it.. High up power. Anyways I think theres more to worry in life now with every problem then the internet police.. And also like google or whatever.. I hear or read something about how they now work with the people that come kick your door in.. lol Like if you type certain words it gets recorded and sent or whatever to em... I remember hearing 1 time a old woman 70 some yrs old arrested and house broken into by some cops and higher people.. cause someone was googled on her internet about something bad..

I remember a few years ago there was a disk around that purported to come from one of the security agencies, that would let you sniff out IP addresses and then find ways into the PCs but it is probably defunct now as security has moved on in great strides.

I remeber a post some time ago the NSA was picking up encrypted comms from the USSR and claim to have data sniffers that look for key words or sounds in lan-line ,cell phone ,e-mail ,internet .

And flash on the computer screen if it picks up the hot keys .If some one from Irag on cell phone say presided, washington DC , xx , it would flag on the computer and they would look into it.

That is hollywood. You need more than a IP address to get in.

It is like the hollywood movies saying there is no limit to video enhancing still image or moving image it is just more math that is BS .Most police use photoshop and spend 5 to 10 years in school laerning how to make it clear and better .You cannot make a claer pictures out of a cheap camera and low quality with picture very dark or grainy .

There is no math or software that does it:cry it is how much time you spend and how good you at it and training you took in school on video enhancing still image or moving image. You can't make a pictures out of nothing .You can inprove the picture some what but it not going to be like you see on SCI.

It is too bad but we do not have the technology (yet) to sit back and run a complex math problem using power of a supercomputer and in weak or 2 you can make out the robbers face.
