How do we feel about the HP mini netbook?

A friend needs an ultra-portable, really basic (and cheap) laptop/notebook/netbook. I'm thinking for $300 this doesn't look too shabby. What do y'all think for someone who is almost absolutely computer illiterate who needs something to do on the road while he's waiting at a loading dock for his truck to get filled or emptied?

    Hi Tibbs

I like them, that is netbooks, the HP one looks stylish, but one thing about netbooks is they are not quick beasts, and it would depend on what they wish to do with this netbook?

If its gaming then forget it, apart from the ones already built into the OS and some of the non-3d intensive games.

For word processing and surfing the net they are great, the keyboards are small though, so hopefully they dont have big fingers.

Mine is a Samsung N110 (but with 2GB ram, which makes a difference)

roflmao Gaming is SO beyond him! I have to help him set up a Gmail account because he doesn't get it. LOL He just needs email, basic surfing, and music. He can't type, so the keyboard size won't kill him like it would me. :-D

He originally told me to find him a laptop for around $100. I laughed hysterically. But because he'll be keeping it in his truck when he's on the road, I was thinking netbook not only for cheapness but storage space.

Thanks! It's good to know I'm not crazy sometimes. :-D

    Hi Tibbs

Hahahahaha on "Gaming is SO beyond him!" ;)

For what you have described then that netbook will be fine for music, email and surfing, which is basically what I use mine for, plus as mentioned Office apps and watching the odd film, when stuck on a work trip.

Does the places you will be at for gigs etc, have free wifi? just thinking he may need one of the Wifi dongles to allow 3G/HSDPA internet via the mobile networks.

He basically lives at trucks stops when he's between stops during the week, and most places have Wifi networks, so it shouldn't be a problem. But definitely something to make sure of, thank you!

Although it would be WAY funny for me if he still couldn't get online. LOL I probably wouldn't get good girlfriend points for laughing at him (again), though. ;)

I'd toss Lenovo in the ring. Walmart had the touchscreen Lenovo with 8 cell battery for $398. cheapest anywhere I found compared to the 4 cell battery most come with - the trade off was Win 7 starter instead of basic. Plus with the touch screen, controlling is a bit easier -tap & click.

Plus I read today dual core Atoms are on the way, maybe you can wait.
