I manage a group of public computer labs at a University. I am building a new image and can't figure out how to diable the right click option on the screen that allows students to change the desktop properties.

Also, I can't figure how to disable students from being able to save files to the desktop. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance

A new image for what operating system?
Professional editions of 2000 and XP have a group policy editor that you can use to deny acess to desktop properties. Let us know if this is the case for you, and we can get you instructions.

For the same OS's denying access to the desktop folder is as easy as setting file permissions on:

    c:\documents and settings\username\desktop

where username is the name of the currently logged in account.

So let us know if we're even barking up the right tree, and we'll try to help.

We are running XP Pro. I have not been able to find anything in our GPO's to enable or disable to prevent this. I just found a site that has all fo teh registry edits for XP. I am going to browse it for registry hacks to disable these things.

That link won't open either. The problem lies with Imageshack. I used to use them myself until I started getting all kinds of problems such as this. I switched to photobucket and haven't had a problem since.

    Thanks

In IE click on Tools > Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab, and then verify that the Show Pictures check box is selected under Multimedia. Click OK.

See if you can see the picture in the thread.

Ok, that works. Not perfectly becasue it removes the settings tab for the local admin group as well. So, I'll have to always remember to disable the local GP anytime I want to make changes. But, it does what I need it to. Thanks

But now the hard one. How can I prohibit students from saving to the desktop? I've denied the WRITE option for both the desktop folder for default users and also the whole documents and settings folder. Still doesn't prevent from saving to desktop. Any ideas?

    Okay two questions:

Did you put deny permissions specifically on the desktop folder for the user you wish to stop from writing? (maybe posting a screenshot of your security dialog might help) You may have to create a user on the system, and log in as them.

When you set permissions on the WHOLE documents and settings folder (which I wouldn't have recommended), did you make sure that the permissions propagated down to all child objects? Otherwise, the permissions would be for the root folder only.

I specifically CHECKED "Deny" write permissions in Documents and Settings/Default User/Desktop

I ended up undoing the Whole documents and Settings thing.

This really is only a problem in Microsoft Word. When I created this image I created a user profile and opened all the software and set it all up the way I wanted it. I changed all of the default file save locations to a folder named Temporary on the C drive. I then hid all other folders in the C drive. After that I copied this profile to the default profile. That way when any student logs in to our PC's. Their profile is built off of this profile that I built. Well everything works fine other than the default file save location for Microsoft Word. It somehow changed itself from C:\Temporary back to the original default My Documents folder. I have no idea how this happened. This is teh reason I am trying to figure out how to block from saving anywhere else other than C:\Temporary.

I figured out a work around today. Since Word wants to automatically start in the My Documents folder, I simply changed the target path of My Documents to C:\Temporary. Worked like a charm. Now, when I click file-save, the Temporary folder comes up default.
