How do you get rid of fragments?

    I have 3 fragments that will not defrag. Is there a reason for this? How can I defrag the 3 resistant fragments?
    I've tried on two different defragmenters..... same result 3 fragments remain

    The registry and pagefiles are in constant use while the computer is running Windows, locked, and therefore can't be defragged in Windows.

    You have to run a boot time defragger such as PageDefrag to get those.

    What defraggers did you try it on? If those are system files (MFT, paging file) then the freeware defraggers won't usually touch them, and you'll need a commercial defragger like diskeeper to run a boot-time defrag for the MFT and paging file. For the page file alone, you could also use the program provided by Mada_Milty in the link above.

    If its a non-system file and is in 3 fragments, you dont need to worry about it much. 3 fragments will not have any impact on file access speeds.

    *squeek* I don't even know if they are MFT files or what? They don't seem to be affecting the system....
    maybe I should just forget them

    I wouldnt worry too much about some fragmented files, especially if/when using NTFS file system, as long gone are the days you need the files on one contigious lump, NTFS and the OS will place files on the drive for quickest loading, and a few fragments do occur at times, if as mentioned they are system files the OS will generally lock them and you will need to run a boot time defrag so that the files are not locked by the system.

    Even then you may never defrag all files, dont think in many years I've ever had 100% defraged HD, always seems to be 1 or 2 files left fragmented.

    I have 3 MFT fragments/ one in folders, one in pages, and one in files. Maybe it is not enough to worry about and just leave it there?
