How do you network a printer

I have a Canon IP6600D Color Printer and have a D-Link Router. Do I need more hardware in order to get the printer on the network? I know the previous D-Link Router (think it was DI-713P - the P for print server) allowed the printer to be networked, but that router crashed. New one is a DI-624.

    Thanks

Not sure what operating system you are using, but I know with windows XP you can attach the printer to one of the computers on your LAN (You will need to install the printer driver on any/all computers you want to be able to use the printer).

Then go to "Printers and Faxes" section, then "Add Printer" - Select the "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer" option and follow the prompts from there.

At one time I had four computers on my home LAN, three with XP and one with Win98 - didn't have any problems printing from any of the PC's not directly connected to my printer. The computer that is physically connected to the printer must be on, of course, for any of the other PC's to access the printer.

the printer must also be set to sharing on the computer that its connected to( usually under the properties tab)

Thanks for the feedback, but I'd like to have a solution where I don't have to have the PC on that has the printer attached. What would be necessary to have it configured that way?

You get a printer server which attaches to your printer and has a slot for the ethernet cable, unless your printer already has a slot for the cable connection. You run a cable from the printer to the router. You install the printer software in all the computers, set the printer up as shared and you can then print to it from any wired and wireless computers whenever the printer is on.
