How doI determine the correct connector for laptop HDD?

I obtained a DELL INSPIRION 600m from a freind.

I am upgrading it and it needs a new HDD

I ordered a Seagate 120 GB replacement ( link is below)

It was a ATA 100 connector. I am assuming the 600m needs a ATA-6 connector? or what is my connector?

It was too short to connect. Other hard drive connector was more flat and didnt have as many pins.. was a tad bit longer connector..not a SATA thats for sure.. then what???

Question is.. do I need to return it and order a ATA6 or do I need an adapter for the Seagate to fit?

Not all Laptop HDD are created equal or so what I am finding out! This laptop is only 2 years old and figured ATA 100 would work fine.. NOT!

Been trying to find a picture on the web of the different laptop connections. I thought I knew my connectors.. apparently not...

Any input would be much appreciated.

 

All 2.5" HDDs come with 44 pins at the end as you will note from looking at the Seagate drive you ordered.

The connector that you see when you remove the HDD which was in the Dell is the Dell adapter. This just pushes on to the standard 44 pin HDD connector.

CAREFULLY, pull the adapter off. Carefully, as you will bend the pins. Then push the adapter onto the new HDD and away you go. The adapter can only go one way so look first.

The HDD that you have will work fine.

That did the trick.. I couldnt figure out how the adapter came off. Looking closer noticed where it was attached..

Loading software now...
