How dual memory works?

Hi, I got confused about dual memory architecture and DIMM. I would like to ask how a dual memory works and how it differs from DIMM?

So are 2 seperate sticks of 1gig ramm better off running under dual channel than if they ran normally (giving your system 2gig's of ramm)?

Wondering if he meant ddr as opposed to dual channel.
