How long does it take to run scandisk?

Scandisk has been running for 6 days in safemode and is still not complete.

Unfortunately, its not my computer so I can't provide too many specs. However, OS is Windows 98 and its been over 2 years since scandisk has been run. Its my dad's computer and I recommended running scandisk when he noted that Windows was failing to load on the first, second and sometimes third try (even after loading in safemode then rebooting). Today is day 6 of the marathon and its still not completed. The number of sectors scanned still increases regularly so I know scandisk has not frozen.

I was just wondering if this was normal - under the circumstances - or if I should abort and try something else.

Hi wedge welcome to geeks :)

That amount of time is a bit excessive but not unheard of, if it is still clocking up then i say let it do its thing....

It is "98" remember things took longer back then :p

Thanks, Q. My inclination is to let it finish too. (I think only 2 or 3 more days to go. :p) I'm afraid that the length of time is a sign of how many problems exist on the hard drive. rolleyes

Yeah two years worth of errors, and no doubt *old* hardware, and the fact that scandisk was never very good, but its doing its job, so your luckier than some :)

The real bad side to situations like this is if it craps out after a week....? well i wouldnt be too happy :p

Add to the 2 year lag between scans, the scandisk included in 98 is slow.
    I say, let it run.

    Hey there,

There is an issue with 98 / 98Se - at 10% the (expletive) resets and it starts again.

Think the following was required to achieve a defrag.
Disable the virtual memory on the Hard drive, as this created some issue as the drives contents are altered, the other was to disable the task scheduler.

Found info online somewhere awhile back, maybe a year ago or so sorry dont remember the details have been on Xp platforms since, a lot of 1's and 0's have gone under the bridge since then - hope this helps though.

Before I was into p.c's I recall a tech I used to work with said basically that this process is a quicker if you run a scandisk first, he worked with 98 a lot and new his stuff.

    G.luck
