Hi ! No matter which virus software I use , when thier icon shows up in the taskbar it takes anywhere from 30-45 seconds before i can use the computer. I only have pop peeper and my anti virus in the start up. I know it's my virus program that's taking long to open. I have MSE right now, but had PC Tools, Avira, AVG, Avast at different times . Everyone I had, I had to wait until the icon in the task bar changed. Even my security program tells me that MSE is not turned on, so I wait until the "castle" turns green. Is this normal, or being from NewYork, do I want it done in a "New York minute" I have windows xp , sp3 , IE8. Thanks everyone.

    Hi

Difficult to answer, would be great to be sitting at your PC, but the issue is likely to be in the anount of startups you have in applications like antivirus etc that boot with your PC.

Do you only have one Antivirus installed now, and one Firewall? if not then uninstall the ones you do not wish to keep as multiple applications of the same ilk will slow your PC down, please also name all the security applications you have installed.

Now narrowing this list of startups down is a start in trying to get your PC to boot as quick as possible (amount of RAM, the CPU you have and how much HDD space is left can all contribute to a slow booting PC) at to that end grab yourself CCLeaner from HERE and install, then run its cleaner and then the registry cleaner (registry one until no items are left to remove) then click Tools > Startup and then click the Save to text file link at the bottom and save the file to your desktop.

Then attach your startup log to your next post as per these instructions HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

and we will be able to weed out the not needed startups from your list, this should help boot your PC quicker, then what we can do is use Startup Delayer to delay a few of the needed applications to different startup times, this will allow your PC to not get bogged down trying to load everything at once.

Hi Halo. I have only MSE for AntiVirus, Windows firewall, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Glary Utilities, and Spybot. On start up only pop peeper and MSE are listed. Ram is 1.256. Free space is listed at 17.8 out of 32.8 on "C". Not having any problems, just thought that it seems like a bit to long for the AntiVirues to start. Seemed like all the ones I tried do the same. So maybe I'll just have to accept it. Use CCleaner and Glary twice a week. Others once a week. Just want to say that this is a nice site to visit. I have picked up a lot from the answers that are given. What's nice is that there are others who give an answer so that it's not just one person who we might want to listen to. So Thanks again. I'll be content with 40 seconds. It is less then a "New York minute " :-D

    Hi

Cheers for the info, what I would try is to boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and see if your PC boots quicker? if so then using StartupCPL (this is the standalone version so no installing) and disable Pop Peeper and see if your PC boots quicker? if so use Startup Delayer to delay that startup by say 30secs.

40secs is not too shabby really for a PC to boot.

Well Halo get this. I tried safe mode. Desktop was fine, but nothing in the taskbar. Clicked on MSE, it's icon shows up in the taskbar, but stays red. Clicked on the icon to open it and it said that it was turned off. Clicked turn on and the turn on button grayed out, but nothing else happened. Tried to get on the internet, but couldn't get passed an error page. Gave me toolbars but nothing else. Got out of safe mode. Things are back to "normal " now. What do you make of that. Think I should give another AntiVirus a try. Like to have one with real time protection. Want a simple one like MSE, not PC Tools.

    Hi

Most startups and services wont work in Safe Mode so that can be normal, all safe mode is, is a test to see if your PC starts any quicker or not than normal mode, I just wanted to know if it did start quicker with bare bones services etc starting as it could possibly tell us if something else is giving your PC some slowness on boot.

But I woudl imagine that it was no real difference is the boot speed.

I would though just disable pop peeper (do you have it set to manage multiple email services and addresses?) to see if it adds to a slower boot and as I mentioned set with Startup Delayer it do start 30secs later as that should give your AV enough time to load and check for updates.

May just in delaying that app give you a slightly quicker boot, worth a try.

Halo, I only have one email program. Outlook Express. Pop peeper does show up before MSE in the taskbar, but waits for MSE to load. Will try that,-get rid of pop peeper and use the sounds in windows sounds. This should be the last one for me. Again "Thanks " for the info. Frank
