How make Desktop icons smaller?

    Win98 1st Edition.
    I have numerous shortcuts on my Desktop. Each consists of an icon and a couple of identifying words (you probably already know that). Can I make each display smaller? Sometimes the shortcuts interfere with a nice wallpaper I have created from photos.
