Ok, I am really sorry if this has already been answered. I really tried to look but there were a lot of posts :) . All I want to know is, how much ram can windows XP support. Or if that makes NO sense, at what point is adding another gig or ram getting to be just a waste of money as far as what games/programs are capable of. Also, if it depends on your cpu, I have a pentium 4 2.8. Thanks ahead of time for any insight you might have.

I would go with a little higher recommendation then Kaula made, right now one gig is good but if in the near future 2 gigs would be the amount of ram that i would choose to put in my machine. So if you have the money, I would recommend stoping at two gigs.

You also need to know how much memory your motherboard can support. I also think 1gb is sufficient for now but maybe in next year you might want to add another gb

Bogart: Would that be 4gb per processor?

The only justification I can see for more than 1 GB of dual-channel RAM is a PC used predominantly for video editing.

Everything else gets by with 1 GB fine, and anymore than that doesn't translate into improved performance.

And if you're using an older OS, even that much may be a waste of money.

What's useful does depend on the operating system you're running. You haven't told us what that is.

Most OS's will support far more than they really need, unless you're using the system for things that really need a LOT of memory. And like Tourangh suggests, your motherboard may impose a lower limit than your OS.

FYI, I have heard that some of the newer games ( ie BF2) run much better with 2 gigs.

Right now, I have a gig. I am getting Fear, and another new game or two, so I am thinking about another gig or so.

My computer right now has 255 (According to Everest - Memory - Physical Memory - Total). I want to put more into my computer. When doing a scan, Crucial states that it 'does not sell Rambus Memory Upgrades'. I think I have 2 slots open left. I was thinking about getting some RAM from www.4allmemory.com are there any other good places to get some cheap RAM at? - Cheers - Mike

Games like Everquest 2 use more than 1gb of ram, easy. Its nice to have breathing space.
