How much Java?

With all of the different types of Java programs listed at their site, it is impossible for me to know exactly what Java I should have on my machine.

I do not want any more than the bare minimum needed to run what Java operations there might be on my installed software and occasional web pages.

I have a desktop case (homebuilt) running XP MCE SP2.

Please let me know what I will need.

Most probably, you need to download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 from this page:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

It will be enough for you if you want just to be able to run Java applications.

Thanks for the reply. I had a lot of Java junk on my machine, and I was not certain of what I could get rid of.

I have very little ability in programming, even to writing the smallest script, so I did not need any of the developers platforms.
