Hi. I know that some of you develop websites for other people/businesses. And in a few weeks, I'm going to set up a small/basic website for a business in my city. so, i was wondering...
What should i charge for the initial/setup fee?
What should i charge for the monthly maintaince fee?

    thanks

Work out how long you think it will take you to develop, use your hourly rate and then add on any expenses.

I'd charge for about 2 hours of maintainance per month for at least the first year or so. If they can manage it themselves (which is what the good solution would be capable of) then reduce that figure to whatever you can afford.

I have ridiculously cheap rates. Don't go there, it doesn't help.

would a setup fee of $200 be reasonable? i have to buy the domain, set it up with a hosting company, set up the email accounts and (obviously) build the website

Our company is a reseller for hosting and we usually charge 3 - 4 $ for hosting on top of the hosters fee's, usually a total of $15 a month plus a 20-50 setup fee then depends on the type of website, a cheapo website HTML and images around $100-200 and for advanced flash and php/asp $600 +. The biggest website we have done for a large cities chamber of commerce with flash and asp stuff we charged $3500.

Really really depends on politics type of company your doing it for how much work it is how much they are getting. No easy answer.

and some advice, charge in sections. Charge for setup, Charge for design. Get approval on design then ask for money for design then put content and charge for content.

    $600.00!!!!

Thank god I'm getting out of building websites, there is just no money in it at all.
600.00 would cover 8 hours of my time.

People / companies just have no idea how much work goes into a custom site.

Yeah my boss keeps talking about pulling out, people want big complex sites for very little money.

very little is an understatement. 600.00 is friggin pennies for a custom.

well, i can't really charge THAT much because I don't have that much "real world" experience behind me. I can build their website and maintain it and do everything they need me to do. but my lack of "real world" credibility will not allow me to charge a whole lot.

I was thinking about setting everything up (the domain, the host, the email accounts, the actual website) for $250.
Then, I am going to charge a monthly maintaince fee of $100. That includes the hosting fees, basic maintance, technical support (if needed), etc

I mean, that sounds reasonable, right????

I'm not sure $100 a month is reasonable. that comes to $1200 a year, which is a lot more than you charged for the website in the first place. I would a) make it an annual contract b) charge for hosting and a couple hours of maintainance per month.

Make sure you pay yourself properly. Don't expect to make much of a profit, because you need to pay yourself your wages.

Man (or woman) cannot live by one website alone! :p

no less than $500.00 dollars and charge a 25.00/mo maint fee. Yearly contract but allow them to pay by the month.
