I expierience my webbrowser is going slower then usual.
Is it possible it's got something to do with my ROM being over-used?
How can i check that? (i work with WIN 98)

Any help is appreciated, thx, book

I think you are getting your terminology mixed up.

If it slows down over time, its probably your system resources.

    Try this:

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=308

If it is always slow, it could be something as simple as you need to clear your temporary internet files.

    What browser are you using?

thx for the link Adrynalyne, ... but the prices of that program start at 499$... i aint no millionaire yet, so i guess i wait until then.

As for the hint on clearing the Temporary Internet Files: i'm on it, hope it does the trick ... u could be right about this, i started reading & it seems that it could be caused by lack of free capacity on hard disk... anyway: i'll let u know if it works.

I use explorer 6.0 [i still work with "Windowns 98" <== no accidental writing-error in hereat all ;-)]

Now, WHERE THE HELL IS THAT MSKB !!!!!

In fact, its only an optional donation, you don't have to pay if you don't want to :)

Make sure your hard drive isnt full, thats a good idea. There are "memory managers" but they arn't really a permenant solution.

    Hi There Book,
Bet Ya your computer is totally overloaded with Gunk from the internet.
There are a plethora of freebies available on this site to down load and use to do a bit of clearing out. But one of the most difficult bloat files is those called index.dat. They grow out and out and need to be deleted from time to time by opening is dos and ferreting them out and deleting them. In the days i had W98 I used a batch file to clean them out - because they cannot be cleaned out while W98 is on stage.
Here is the batch file I used

    "@ECHO OFF
    ECHO DelTemps for Windows
ECHO Deleting default user's temporary content...
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.* > NUL
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\*.* > NUL
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES\*.* > NUL
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY\*.* > NUL
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\RECENT\*.* > NUL
    echo This deletes Internet Leftovers.......
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\tempor~1\content.ie5\*.* > NUL
    echo Bloat Files Deflated.....!
    ECHO Done!"

Copy the part between the quotes and save as deltemps.txt on your c drive.
Rename it it as a .bat extension.
Make sure by using explore that all the deltrees point in the right direction - close down windows reopen at the Dos prompt type DELTEMPS and all the gunk will be erased. If there is a lot of it then it will take quite a long time - ie 3-4 minutes. When you see "Done' reboot and its all gone.
If in doubt get back on here and lets know if more guidance is reqd
    Cheers
    Robert

Phew ran out of time on the last post. Please pardon the typing errors. The deltemps batch file cleans out ALL temp and index.dat files that IE5 0r 6 generates. Hope that clears it up.

What Robert suggested would only do part of the job - I use CCCleaner (CrapCleaner) among others see http://majorgeeks.com/downloads12.html. You may have other background processes related to internet aware applications, e.g., toolbars, pop-up ads, etc.. Try http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25834 and http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=26948

Then you may be left over with non-malicious software that slows down your computer. For example, do you really need Real Plaver to continually check for updates? Review your start-up list see http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=619 and http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4075

Following on from that you can optimise your Windows 98 system, disk, memory, etc. but try the above first.

Use these 3, all free and don't conflict with each other. Crap Cleaner, as per maxwell's post gets most. The other 2 get the rest.

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/ Freeware 3.1
EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575 Not for XP yet?
    and CrapCleaner v1.11.062 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Make sure index.dat is actually deleted. I run a batch file on W98SE and delete it manually a couple of times a week, otherwise it grows like Topsy. Can post my batch file if you need it. Try earlier post batch file first. Hope this helps. Bazza

Keep an eye on your index.dat files, all the same. CrapCleaner and/or Cleanup! are supposed to reset index.dat if you boot up immediately after running them. I don't reboot immediately but delete index.dat manually using a bat(ch) file in W98SE. There are also multiple instances of index.dat. Do a find/search for index.dat to see how many, and where they are located on your system. You have to set "View all files, including hidden"( or similar wording), to see index.dat. Bazza

PS: don't forget EmpTemp as well. It finds stuff that CC and Cleanup! miss.
