Hey network experts. I am new to wifi internet, and was wondering if what I set up recently was good enough security-wise.

I just got a Netgear ME102 Wifi access point to go into my 8 port wired router. I have 128 bit WEP enabled and MAC address filtering on, my 2 laptops are the only MAC addies allowed. This is an older, discontinued access point though, and it does not have the 256 WPA or whatever...should I still be ok?

    Thanks

PS: I have changed the SSID and default IP of the access point as well

well, as far as WiFi goes then you've done all the right things to secure it. The biggest problem is that someone with a radio capturnig frames at the tranciever level wil always be able to break the encryption. But your mac address excludes would keep them from connecting to the network. If you're super worried then there's some good news. The IEEE just approved a draft of 802.11i, which features hardware AES encryption at the radio level. Until we start to see 11i based equipment then your wireless is secure as it can be.

on that note, you might also want to try netstumbler to see exactly how far your signal goes.

yeah, i use net stumbler as well. i highly reccomend enabling the highest encryption that your router can handle. its tough sometimes getting the laptops and stuff to recognize it. but its worth it.

You know, someone was telling me that the 64 bit encryption is stronger than the 128 in the fact that it doesn't transmit as many weak keys. Has anyone heard that? I was just wondeing. 2600 had a pretty good story on 802.11b last year....

What exactly happens when I route my DMZ to a certain IP address??

All ports are open to that IP address.

DMZ is demilitarized zone, all the ports open on that computer if im not mistaken. something you really dont want to enable on a computer with sensitive data.

i tried airsnare, crashed on startup oh well.
