How Safe Is Outlook?

I have recently read an organisation's instructions about the communication of confidential information. It said that if email was used confidential information could only be included if the email was sent from one Outlook account to another Outlook account. That made me wonder if Outlook is somehow safer or more secure than other methods. Is it safer?

Unless encrypted email is used via a mail program, where the sender and receiver have the encryption key, no email is actually confidential. Outlook is no different to any other email provider.

If it's Outlook.com you are asking about - Microsoft's online email service - then, as Max says it is no safer than any other email service. But larger organisations don't use that, they mostly use the Outlook component of Microsoft Office and the Microsoft Exchange servers. This has the security features commercial organisations need and is probably what you were reading about.

I'd have to agree with the above two posts and Outlook if its off Exchange or desktop as well as online Outlook.com mail is no better or worse than any email system, if you need security then encryption is the way and you can do this with a free Comodo certificate https://www.comodo.com/home/email-security/free-email-certificate.php

I work as some know in a sensitive area in healthcare and emails and data or patients is paramount, we can send patient data internally but the secure systems block it from being sent externally unless we use encryption or a different email service unique to the NHS called NHS.mail this we can sent from NHS mail to NHS mail, but not secure to send from my hospital NHS account to NHS mail, confusing but I see the logic. Mark depends on is your data needing to be secure? what are your worries?
