    Hi,

It sounds like a partition problem to me. A couple things to try.

Go to Disk management (Start>Run>type in DISKMGMT.MSC hit OK) in XP and look at the graph for the laptop's HD. Does it show two partitions: the System Reserved and also the larger one which contains your files? If it shows the larger partition can you right-click to Assign a Drive letter?

If it isn't shown in Disk Management you can try: Install Partition Wizard on the XP computer. Look to see if it sees the partition. If it doesn't see it we can try to recover the partition in Partition Wizard.

    thanks sach2

I tried what you told me . to go to Start>Run>type in DISKMGMT.MSC

I can see my 280gb partition and my SYSTEM RESERVED 100mb partition. I tried to Open or explore my 280gb partition but there is what it show up when I did it.

It appears Windows doesn't see the partition as NTFS so it doesn't see any files. I would go ahead and install Partition Wizard and let it try to recover the partition. I consider it safe.

Click on Disk 1 in Partition Wizard to highlight it.
Select Partition Recovery from the list on the left of the window.
In the recovery window that opens Select Full Disk then Next button
Then Quick scan and the Next button.
Look at the results and verify that the 280gb partition has some used and unused space that reflects your memory of about how much space should have been used before the problem.
Check all the boxes for all partitions. [You want to keep all of the partitions so checkmark all of the boxes!]
    Hit Finish.

Now see if the 280gb partition has a drive letter.
If it does then open Windows Explorer and see if you can access your files.
If it does not have a drive letter than in PW right-click the partition and choose Change Drive Letter to assign a drive letter to the partition. Hit OK.
Then hit Apply button in the main PW window. Now check in Windows Explorer to see if you can access your files.

    Hi,

For some reason I missed your last post and today's post isn't here either.

Anyway, Pw's Explore function only let's see the list of files. You should check in Window's Explorer to see if you could access them.

If you can't access them in Windows then you might try PowerDataRecovery (it is free for home users) to copy the files to your external HD. Many users have had good results with that recovery software.

Once your files are safe, we could work on trying to fully recover the partition to get Win7 working again or you could reformat and install as you choose.

    *******
If you get a chance could you post a screen shot of PW as in your last post but without the error message so that I can see the list of partitions and filesystem types in the main PW window?
