How to block an entire domain in Windows Live Mail?

    Hey everyone,

I've been trying to solve this for a while now. I'd like to block all incoming emails from a specific domain, but every email i receive that i'd like to block has a different name and domain, with just the same .mobi, . biz or .ru address at the end. Example:
    HealthyLifestyle@8su901jk.mobi
    JuiceforLess@5300pfh.mobi
    Lottoluck@cyhu.ru
    salogov@rid.ru
    cheapdeals@homepop.biz
    businessphonesystems@lunchdude.biz

the only thing that always stays the same is the ending, so i'd like to just block every email from .mobi, .biz and .ru but i'm unsure how to do this! can anyone help me out? The only thing i can seem to do is block each individual email, but since they change the address each time and i only receive one email from each address, doing it that way is completely pointless.

thanks in advance for the help!

Well, here's my suggestion. I suggest the procedure explained at http://email.about.com/cs/oetipstricks/qt/et112701.htm except that you try using an asterisk (*) as a wildcard along with the top level domain. In other words, in the blocked senders box, enter *.mobi, *.biz and *.ru. I am not sure WLM will accept/recognize the *. So, again this is an idea. Let us know whether it worked.

Thanks for the reply! I tried the asterisk like you suggested and it didn't work :(

i really had my fingers crossed! any other suggestions? is this just a 'problem' with windows live mail?

    thanks again!!!

One step you might take is to open the Safety Options panel, select the Options tab, and set the level of junk mail protection to High. Note: if you do this, you should check your Junk Mail folder often since some regular mail may be caught as well.

However, perhaps the best way to accomplish what you want is to set WLM to only accept email into your Inbox from senders in your Contacts, plus any others you specify. Senders not in your Contacts can be added to the safe senders list Safety Options, Safe Senders (tab), screen.

So, do you see the logic here? Instead of trying to directly block certain domains, which, as we now know, is ineffective due to the trickery of the senders, you only accept those senders in your Contacts and others you have specifically granted acceptance. Other mail will go to the Junk Mail folder.

Note: I am referring to WLM 2012.

Correct to a sentence in my previous post: I meant to say "Senders not in your Contacts can be added to the safe senders list in the Safety Options | Safe Senders (tab) screen.

    Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, that suggestion would be counter productive for me. I'm an artist, which relies almost 100% on unsolicited emails from galleries and clients.... so it would actually be more complicated if i did that, since i'd still have to sort through my junk mail every day just as much as before, except now it would be in a different place, essentially adding a step that i could potentially forget about.

I probably just have to keep sorting through 50-100 spams a day, but i figured it was worth seeking a different solution.

Any other suggestions? Thanks a whole bunch!

I administer a website for a church; this is a .org website. As a test, I logged on to the web server and sent a message from there, i.e. from a .org sender, to my gmail address. Before sending it, I had created a "filter" in my gmail account to delete any mail from a *.org sender. I sent the message and the checked my gmail account. The message was in the Trash folder. So, the filter (equal to a rule in WLM) worked.

Gmail can be configured to work with email clients such as WLM. To do that, POP or IMAP mail must be enabled in the gmail account settings. Now, I realize you may not want to start a new email account but this is an option. Also, if you are using a email account provided by your ISP, I would check the account setting options to see whether a rule/filter can be applied at the mail server level so that those undesired senders such as *.ru can be stopped before they even get into your WLM inbox.

go to 'Find > Message" and search for any email. Then 'Action > create rule from message'. Add .mobi etc to the 'Where the from line includes' and then select an action item (delete, move, etc). Works for me in Live mail 2012

    Welcome to MG

This thread is 3 years old, and the subject wasn't about dealing with individual email addresses. Your answer works for individual email addresses. It does not at all work for a 'domain'. Different issue.

Thanks Max. This technique actually does work for filtering domains. I am successfully filtering .stream and .win domains since implementing. All msgs are successfully routed to the junk folder.

I know I am late to the show here, but this thread showed up in a search enging and it didn't seem like there was a fix.

That doesn't block anything though. There is no mail program I know of, least of all Live Mail, that will block any domain. The junk folder is not blocking anything. Action at the server is the only way of actually blocking anything. Your solution, like that for most and the solutions posted 3 years ago are the same - a filter and nothing more.
