"How to build and host websites" for the utter divvie!

Just a narrative introduction to what I am doing and why; a prelude to my journey into the unknown!

With your permission, I shall probably run this from Majorgeeks, as a sort of FAQ for anyone as technically inept as me who wants to step out of his depth into webhosting and web design.

I started scripting my own website in html from scratch about a year ago. In the last couple of months I have stepped it up in efficiency to incorporate bits of CSS coding. Well that is about the sum of what I know about websites!

So what am I on about?

The background! I have a debt to pay! I am strangely disabled such that has seen me ostracised and bullied for the best part of 43 years. Then I really took depression to the extreme by going nudist to seek the ultimate ridicule. To my shock I was accepted as just another guy on the beach. Which I am..... I insist! I haven't looked back since. Apart from saving lives, Naturism is a clean, safe lifestyle for women and children away from the lascivious hawks and perverts of mainstream society.

But.... we are forever raided and stalked by degenerates. Then we are held back by webhosters whose T&Cs are loaded with a mix of perversion, paranoia and guilty consciences, which our lifestyle just does not engender. All of a sudden these wonderful people have nowhere to go. And it is no fault of their own.

This is where I step in and pay my dues! I'll give them a home. I truly haven't a clue what I am doing .......but I shall be their webhoster.

I have a PC with half-a-T of hard drive and 1.5G of RAM. The processor is dual-core. It can cope! As from last night it is housing an Apache HTTP server. I have bought a domain.

I have also downloaded Wordpress, MySQL 5.1.49 and php-5.3.2. Drupal and Elgg are also being considered, but they use more cap than Wordpress/Buddypress

All the instructions (mostly in incomprehensible jargon) lean towards an online webhoster. As I said this is out of the question. I am convinced my PC is up to taking on the task. I shall only host about 5-10 networks, none of which will be anything more complex than social networkers, with forums, photos, groups, friendlists etc etc etc. I shall keep videos to a minimum on each site to save bandwidth. I will probably customise the sitebuild software I offer the siteowners.

This is a live exercise in a total techno-divvie claiming independence from an obnoxious little world by going solo! I believe I can do it and I challenge you guys to tell me I can't!

Or even better still, I challenge you guys to help me out when I ask for directions or accidentally drive up the wrong alley! Pretty please....... you would be helping some wonderful people!

Oh it's been done before countless times. But I am prepared to hang myself out here to dry so that others equally clueless can come into Majorgeeks to learn sitebuilding and webhosting from scratch. I shall keep updating as I go along and hopefully this will mean something to others in the same boat. Every post should be an FAQ. In return for looking an utter wally for the greater good, I hope to get some help along the way. That is..... if it's ok with you guys!

This could be Technosoap..... Big Brother, without the sleaze and the tantrums (I hope).

All my future posts will be technically related and they will be legion! Today, this is just the background, the whys and the wherefors!

As I said, I don't know what I'm doing, so even the next step could be cataclysmic!

Ah well! First I gotta migrate some ning networks and fix my PC or I got no credibility. Hold the back page!

 

I would check it out with your ISP first. If you host pictures of nekkid people on your site you might find that you are breaking the terms of your agreement with them. Forearmed is forewarned.

 

That never crossed my mind!

I have thousands of nude images on my PC. I send them regularly via email using my ISP, Virginmedia.

I use the Virginmedia webmail. Nude photos are saved on there indefinitely as part of my mail.

Would all that not have been an issue before now?

Surely if I am hosting nude images on a website my PC it is no different to that which I have been storing, uploading and downloading for years in my own right anyway.

If this is the case thay will lose a multimedia customer.

You probably aren't the only one Will... seems to me that half of the web innovations come about because people can't get enough of looking at one another with their kit off ~ it wasn't called Flash for any old reason! ... however I would check out any possible pitfalls. Most ISP's and forums have a 'porn' clause ( justifiably so ) prohibiting the posting and distribution of questionable material... who decides what is questionable is another matter, but no point putting yourself in the firing line.
