    howdy

I have a file that when looking at it in windows explorer, has a description of the file just under the file name. I have tried renaming the file and viewing the properties, but I find no way to get rid of the description. Can anyone help?

Type of file and description are two different things. Could you give an example of the description you see? For instance, below the file name system.ini it would say Configuration File which is not a description, but rather the type of file it is. The only way you can change the type of file is to rename the file to some other extention, such as .exe.

Maybe if you could give an example of what you see, or even a screen shot, it would help us to understand what you are referring to.

Yo, the Impaler formerly known as Immaculate, :D

Vlad, I've never seen that, but it reminds me of the long comments that are available in shortcuts. Are you sure that filename isn't a shortcut?

Select the folder that filename is in, then click View in the Explorer menu bar, and then "Choose Details." Is "Comments" checked? If so, uncheck it and OK and refresh and see whether the thing is gone.

(This is nothing but a wild guess, but it'll only take 30 sec to try it out)

If the wise one's suggestion about the comments didn't work, this might be worth a try.

In Explorer, Tools menu > Folder Options > View tab > uncheck "Show popup description for folder and desktop items"

I'm on Win2k but I'm assuming it's the same or similar in XP...

that's a good idea but hee hee i'm afraid it won't work in my case.. you see this program is a gag program and I am trying to put one over on a friend of mine, but if he sees that description, he will know.. So I was hoping to find a way to get rid of it for good on any computer.

Got a good Hex editor? Edit the program file. You'll be able to see the words. It's gotta be a tiny, simple program.

But make a copy of the file before you mess with it. You might screw it up beyond use.

Hexeditor XVI32 or Resource Hacker would do it, I think.

Man, that was a prime example of misunderstanding all around. We're scrubbing around trying to help you get rid of something from your EXPLORER DISPLAY on your machine, when what you really want is to eliminate something from the executable file itself.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think ya gotta crack the file to get rid of that.

Wanta tell us where you got it? Mebbe there's another version out there without the description.
