I just bought a PC from a friend and was changing user accounts, removing programs and just basically cleaning out the old and setting it up for myself. I have everything changed and ready to go, but noticed that when I right-click on "my computer" and select general properties, it still shows in the basic specifications that the PC (WinXPsp2)...is still "registered" to my friend. How can I change this?

Thank you so much for your time and help.

It would be a really good idea to just reformat the hard drive and install a clean, fresh copy of Windows. That way you can be sure that it's clean and set up your way and completely free of any viruses or spyware or other bugs and potential problem starters. However, I believe the registry key for the registered owner is here:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version and look in the right pane for 'Registered Owner'. If you are intent on changing it, right click, select Modify, and enter whatever you want. But it's really not a good idea to muck about in the registry for such a trivial reason. Personally, I'd leave it alone because you'll rarely even see it, and it makes no difference to anything what it says in the System Properties window.

    Thank you!!!

How to change registered owner from Microsoft

After you type regedit you will see folders on the left hand side. Keep clicking the (+) signs until you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion don't click the (+) sign for current version just highlight the folder and look in the right hand pane then follow the rest of instructions.
