How to deal with suspect USB drives?

We recently cleaned a Windows 7 Professional system after a possible malware infection. Is there anything we need to do before resuming use of USB memory sticks and USB external drives that had been connected to the system at times when it was possibly infected?

For example, should I configure Windows so that USB devices cannot autorun when they are plugged in? If so, what is the recommended way to do that?

Should I perform any scans on these devices before continuing to use them? If so, which scans are recommended?

    Thanks much,
