I've got icons for AOL (9.0 Security version), Quicktime, and Real Player in my system tray - and I don't want them there. Can't right-click them to delete them, and can't find them via Start>>Programs>>Start-Up.

So, how can I delete these unwanted icons? Running Windows XP Pro.

Don't try to "delete the icons" – Instead, stop these programs from running at boot-up in the first place! ;)

You can do this by using a utility application like StartUp 1.3 or perhaps StartRight which will allow you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts.

If you don't like those two utilities; check out the MajorGeeks Admin Tools section where you will find many more utilities which can be used as "start-up controllers," allowing you to pick and choose which programs start immediately whenever your computer boots-up or re-boots!

    Good Luck!

Compuable is correct. You can also use a program I really like called winpatrol:

Winpatrol not only lets you choose what runs at startup but will also notify you if a new startup entry has been made and lets you choose whether or not to keep it.

If you want the programs, just not on the system tray...right click the tray / properties / task bar / customize / on the items listed, right click and choose always hide.

also you can try "msconfig"-> startup tab-> choose what you don't want to run.

Great suggestions, especially the msconfig route. Thanks!
