If you recently used the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant you most likely have two folders left behind. Windows10Upgrade is about 20MB and the Windows.old Folders can be over 20GB! We've written about removing the Windows.old folder in the past but in our latest tests, CCleaner failed to remove the Windows.old folder and Microsoft Disk Cleanup no longer has the option to remove old installation files.

The option to delete previous versions of Windows does not appear to be available, see the image. Now what? Properties shows I have 86,448 files using 16.3GB of space. Can I just right click and delete? And the Windows 10 Upgrade Folder also?

No, all files won't be deleted. I believe CCleaner has the option to delete the old files.

Should I back up the Windows.old folder JUST IN CASE? I'm not really all that thrilled with the latest Windows 10.

No. Unless you NEED the space, remove it when you're sure.

The folder you are referring to was generated by the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant during the Anniversary Update. If you are satisfied your system is operating fine you can safely remove this folder.

To remove the windows10upgrade folder do the following:

In your Search box type Programs and Features then press the Enter key
Scroll down and right-click on Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant and select Uninstall

When this has been uninstalled successfully the windows10upgrade folder located at C:\windows10upgrade will also be removed automatically.
