Does anyone know if it's possible for an individual to encode an original DVD so it cannot be easily copied? If so, how?

Yes it is, but you have to purchase the protection schemes from the companies that create such things, and it isn't cheap. I had the name of a company that provided copy-protection for software (can't seem to find it now), but AFAIK that's the only way to do it....

Basically, if it's not a "Hollywood" production, it may not be worth it cost-wise? And ours isn't - it is precious almuni memorabilia.

As far as I know, and from what I've read on forums such as VideoHelp.com, copy protection only works on replicated discs, not burnt ones.

You could use a dvd/cd/file encrypter to encrypt the files on the disk and then only those who could decrypt them from the disk to the hard drive could access them. There are such programs that will write to a disk but only allow extraction of the unencrypted material with the proper password.
