You understand that formatting the drive will erase EVERYTHING, right? There's several ways to format the drive; you can use a bootable utility, attach the drive as a slave or external to a 2nd PC, or simply boot to your Windows XP install CD and press Enter at the first screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement, press Esc to start a fresh install, select the drive/partition and press D to delete it, then select it again and choose the quick format option, and you're on your way to re-installing Windows. Here's an easy-to-follow guide for a clean XP install, complete with screen shots:

If you want to use a bootable utility, try one of these:
    CPM (Cute Partition Manager)
    Darik's Boot-and-Nuke
    Partition Logic
    Super F-Disk
Many more drive utilties can be found in the Major Geeks Drive Utilities Download Section. You can also download free drive utilities from your hard drive manufacturer's web site, unless it's a Toshiba hard drive; for some reason, Toshiba has abosultely NO support for their hard drives.
I hope this helps! Keep us posted, and if you have more questions, feel free to ask!

(and you actually can format it using the old-school DOS methods, you just have to run fdisk first to delete the NTFS partition, then re-create a FAT32 partition and format it; keep in mind that old-school DOS has hard drive size limitations depending on which version of DOS you're running)
