I had a little moment of brilliance and managed to connect the power supply to my new 6800 GT graphics card with the polarity reversed and funnily enough it went phhzzzz and puffed out smoke. It doesn't work very well at all now, unsurprisingly. But what would actually have been fried here? Is it worth sending it to be repaired? I am fairly confident it is farked but just thought I would ask.

Does it not take a normal 4 Pin Molex connecter & how did you manage to connect backards?

The secret is to plug it into the agp socket first, then attach the power. Thus you cant see the socket properly. And what can I say, it did actually fit in and was secure inside the socket. This is a question I have considered at length. Conclusion: I am a muppet.

    Ooooopssss expensive mistake.

If you are fortunate (unlikely) then you will have only blown some diodes, however as rectification is not normally required as the internal workings of a PC are already DC this is unlikely.

Most PC add on cards are built on multi layered circuit boards and use surface mount components, that without the correct equipment cannot be repaired.

You could risk sending it away for repair and ask for a quote, but it maybe cheaper in the long run to just buy a new one.
