Can anyone tell me how to install a slave hard drive? My computer uses IDE and on the one connected to the main HD there's another connector that says slave. I hooked up the HD and turned on my computer and.. Nothing happened, no new device detected or anything...

Did you set the jumpers on the HDD's correctly ?

Look on the label of the slave drive. There should be a diagram telling you how to set the jumper(s). Jumpers are small metal clips coated in plastic on the back of the drive that connect two pins. You have to move the jumper to the slave position according to the diagram. It should then be recognized.

Just realized that first pic may give you the wrong idea.

Don't go by my pic for the jumper settings all HD are not the same. Use the diagram on the label of your drive.

So before i even read this i tried to figure it out my self, I didn't expect a reply so soon, But now i got a worse problem, due to thinking bios settings were why the HD wasn't detecting, so i changed some things and tried a few diff things and put the new HD on the master IDE to see if it even works and now "no operating system found with the original HD and in bios the Drive list, they all say NONE, even my CD drive isn't being detected now, Idk what happened but it looks bad.. wtf could of i messed up?

There should be an option in BIOS to set defaults and exit. That would be the simplest way.
If you haven't changed jumpers on the original HD just connect it to the end of the IDE cable by itself without the new HD. It should be detected. Then we can worry about setting up the new one.

yeah i did change the jumper but i put it back the way it was, none of these settings are working no matter what i do, i set it to auto and restart back into bios and it still says none, ive also set it to auto and pressed esc to see if it's changing, but it's not. Ive tried default settings and it's not working.

There's not too much to mess up here. Double check the jumper is set to Master according to that drive's label or markings. Make sure the cable is firmly attached to the motherboard connector. Make sure the HD is on the end connector rather than the middle connector.

The BIOS should be set to Auto or Defaults. Are you saying when you set it to Auto it isn't saving the setting?

I got both HD's to detect and the one with my OS is working again, all i did was swap the IDE cables from the CD rom drives, so idk if it was just lose or that cable is bad; The new HD is detecting in bios and the found new hardware even popped up but no instalation or anything and i kept checking in "my computer" but the drive never showed up, i might try "add new hardware"

    *update*
I tried add new hardware and it said the device is working properly, yet it's still not showing up in my computer along with the c drive..

You have to format the new drive. I'm guessing XP.
    Start>Run>type in compmgmt.msc
Select Disk Management from the left pane of the window that opens.
You should see your new drive in the graphs (probably DISK 1 [Disk 0 is probably your OS drive]).
You need to create a partition(s) and then format it to NTFS file system.

A complete guide from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

    *******
Depending on how large the drive is you may want to create more than one partition but that is up to you.
