i got an old Realistic System 1210 mixer it has a tape deck, mixer deck, a power deck and a AM/FM deck plus where you can hook up a cd deck and a turntable deck. now i got it all hooked up and it works but i need a FM antenna wire but i dont have one. does anyone know what i can make one out of? it hooks up like a speaker it has the 2 little wire hookup's but i tried useing speaker wire as a antenna but no go so what am i doing worng?

on the back where you hook up the wire it says FM3000 if that tells you anything:rolleyes:

see i forgot all about that ;) i wonder you think thin 12volt wire and speaker wire will work :p

In there example they are using "Old" TV antenna wire, but in theory any insulated double wire should work, hey it's not carrying any current.

It does matter some BCG. Antenna's impedance affects it's performance. The twin lead connections were for 300 ohm antennas, which that old twin-lead is. Standard low resistance wire won't work as well.

yea i heared that befor but the station i play is like only 10miles away ;)

one time i had a wire running from the batt to my mothers radio in her car (with no fuse i know i should of put one) and it shorted on the body of the car. can you guess what the wire did and can you guess what happen to the hand of the person that graped the wire and pulled it lose from the batt.

See now that's the great thing about this site, the more heads solving the problem the better the answer...........Thanks G.T. (I was kinda lazy in my response)

ok so i'm not getting anything i guess i got to make my way 30miles just to get some 300OHM wire. unless ACE hardware has it ;) i thought even with that type of wire i would get the local radio station but nope nothing but i can pick some AM stations up lol

ACE used to carry it, but I haven't looked for any in years, and you may have to buy a bunch. Twin-lead has mostly been replaced by 75 ohm coax in recent years.

Make certain you make it either a full length antenna at 9' 4.24" or half length at 4' 7.12" or you will only recieve certain stations, I reread the link and its great

I must be getting "Old" that dang stuff was every where when I was younger

yea but people around here still use TV's made 30 so years ago so i think they should still have it :p i think i may have some 300ohm grounding wire will that work?

I have a huge roll of coming from the antenna on my house to inside, due to I do not use it. If no RatShack around, if you have anyone around that is not using their old Outdoor Antenna, that should work. Also, BTW, nowdays they use 22-24awg wire for Antenna wire. It is about the length, not the gauge, and the fact of the relation of the FM station that you are trying to pick up.

An antenna is most efficient( transfers most signal) when it's impedance matches the electronic impedance of the receiver. Any pair of wires stuck on an antenna input will work a little bit, but if the impedence doesn't match the receiver electronics, then the receiver will reject the input signal as noise. The 300 OHM impedance cable is 300 OHMs because of the uniform distance between each of the two wires. Replicating this precision with loose wire is going to offer a few challenges. :)
