In Explorer, View, then Details. Then in Tools, Folder options, View tab, UNcheck Hide extensions of known ...

    Oughta do it.

Let us know if that doesn't get you what you wanted.

    On a similar problem.

I'm not actually a fan of XP displaying everything in Icon (or similar graphic) format in Windows explorer. I prefer the traditional (as in good old W98) text giving the company name and details, so that it can all be easily visible on the screen. I've figured out that I can go into View and change to 'Details' listing, but that seems to be a one-off solution (i.e. only works for the particular directory I am viewing). What do I have to do to get the Details listing for every directory and every time that I open explorer? Do I need to change options somewhere to make this view permanent? :)

Wod, I have Details in every folder on my machines always, and have had since day one. I really loathe the icon view. You can't turn the default icon view off in XP's Fonts folder, but a single clcik on the View icon will jump you to details in Fonts.
I think all you have to do for the others is this:
In Explorer, in any folder, choose View, Details. Then clcik Tools, Folder Options, and choose the Classic and Each in its Own window on the General tab, and on the View tab, select show contents of system folders, show hidden files, and remember each folder's settings, THEN hit APPLY at the BOTTOM of the panel, ... THEN hit the big button that says Apply to All Folders, and OK. The order of clicks is important.
Should hold. It does for millions. If it doesn't hold for you, come back and we'll give you a registry tweak that will reset all of your folder views.
But get rid of the default XP eye-candy view everywhere in Explorer and you're most of the way to the view you want.

Aw c'mon, Goldie. You've known all that stuff since you were a minnow.

(The only part of setting the settings for maximum info that's at all hard to figure is the necessary ORDER of the clicks. If you don't do all of the checking and unchecking and THEN click Apply (at the bottom) and THEN click Apply to All Folders (the big button near the top), Windows gets confused, and you wind up asking some help and support board why Windows won't hold your settings.)
    :p
