    Win XP Pro SP 3 (Performance Edition)
    AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8Ghz
    ECS Goal 3+ Mobo w/1Gig RAM

    After formatting my harddrive I mistakenly installed Win XP twice. Every time I startup I have to select between the 2 installations of Windows. I deleted the version that I wasn't using but it is still listed in the boot.ini file. I went into msconfig utility and tried to use it to remove the invalid listing, and it said it was invalid, and asked if I wanted to remove it. I said yes, it was removed, I restarted to save changes and after restarting, the 2nd listing was still there and it was back in msconfig utility. Tried 3 times to remove it but it keeps coming back. Any suggestions? I've listed a copy of my boot.ini below. The default listing is the correct listing that I want to keep.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /usepmtimer
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /usepmtimer

    open the boot.ini file using notepad then delete the ".0" from the default line and then delete the complete line for the Windows.0 OS.

    Then don't for get to save the file

    Thanks Yargwel, but why delete the ".0" and then delete that line? The one with ".0" is the one that works. Couldn't I just delete the 2nd listing (the one without the ".0") and leave the one that is the working listing alone? Notice the default listing is the one with".0"

    What I meant it to read was (I was obviously not very clear :-o):

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /usepmtimer

    But if, as you say it is the .0 version which is working then just delete the last line so it reads:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /usepmtimer
