How to Network Win XP & Win ME ?

    :wave

Host - Win XP Pro - NIC - Dial-up modem
    - Comodo firewall - Comodo BoClean - Avast - WinPatrol - SpywareBlaster

Client - Win ME - NIC
    - AVG Antivirus (had outpost firewall on but it wouldn't let AVG run, and is possibly the reason why Avasts resident scanners wouldn't work causing me to ditch Avast and instal AVG)

Have these 2 joined together by NIC's and a crossover cable
I want to share files and an internet connection between the two

Originally set up the network through XP put the settings onto a floppy (yes they still have a use ;)) and transfered it over to the ME, the .exe ran fine but the connection was no-go, so I have changed probably every setting numerous times since then (mostly on the ME)

It works but is a little buggy
can file share, but if i open up a shared folder from the XP on the ME it stalls
opening up a shared folder from the ME on the XP works fine

Applications on the ME can update via the internet, but i cannot access the internet via a browser on the ME

When the LAN is enabled, if i try to connect to the internet on the XP it stalls the whole computer for about a minute (cannot do anything including task monitor) then it works fine.

When the LAN is connected but I am offline, the ME continuously tries to access the internet through the XP.

I am thinking of redoing the whole thing again from scratch but would like some input on where I have gone wrong and what is the best way to redo it.

Would appreciate some tips or a rough guide on redoing it or am willing to provide any required info necessary to fix the current config.
Would definitely appreciate any advice on potential security issues that I may have enabled as well (the stalling has me a bit concerned)

    Thanks :)

Trying to do ICS through a dial up modem?

    Yuck!

    Ok.

What are the IP addresses of the machines?
Under proxy settings in IE for Windows ME, what is the IP address being used?
What is the default gateway IP address?

    Win XP
    IP Address 192.168.0.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.0.2

    Win ME
    IP Address 192.168.0.2
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

    ie5 (ME)
Tools - Internet options - connections - LAN settings
Use a proxy server for your LAN
    Address 192.168.0.1 port 8080

    Ok, thats not gonna work.

Windows XP cannot have a default gateway of 192.168.0.2.

Really, because its not reaching out to the internet through the Windows ME machine, it doesn't need one at all.

    Remove it.

Start with that and see where it gets ya.

    Thanks

was expecting that, it was just something I tried that never made any sense.

weird looping gateway removed as requested

now ME does not continuosly try to connect to the internet (only assuming it is ME, did not do it when LAN was disabled)

ie7 did not stall upon opening / connecting to the internet

still cannot connect via browser from ME

See if you can actually ping google.com.

If that doesnt work, try it by IP address

    64.233.167.99

Does this from command.com on the ME machine.

ping google.com on the ME - worked (all 4 pings successful)

Change the IE5 settings to automatically detect settings under proxy info.

If that doesnt work (temporarily) remove the firewall on the XP machine and see if its the culprit.

    ie5 (ME)
Tools - Internet options - connections - LAN settings
Use a proxy server for your LAN

I deselected the above - now it works :)

I originally had it deselected, but one of my other settings must have been stopping ie connecting as well.

So, it looks good. Will keep an eye out for strange behaviour over the next few days, but seems stable now.

    Thanks a lot Adrynalyne :wave
