Since my laptop updated a couple weeks ago I've been unable to open anything I've downloaded. I used to get a window when I'd right click that gave the option of running as ADMIN. but now it wants to know what I want to open the file with, not install it. I'm running Win 10. I'm trying to avoid having to do a complete restore of the system.

Try downloading and installing 7Zip. It works wonders for me. :)

No direct answer since there can be different causes... try this installer troubleshooting checklist. Since Windows inexplicably no longer knows what to do with an installer file, re-associating that file type might be the solution (#7 on checklist).

I've kinda figured out I've got Win 11 running since June, if that changes anything. Don't recall installing it but I'm mid 70's so I'll hide behind that! The programs I'm trying to open are Smart Defrag 8 , then Tweaking.com to fix that when I couldn't open defrag. I wanted to edit my original post but couldn't find anything on how to do it. I'm not sure that file associations have anything to do with installing a download.
