How to optimize AMD K6-2 533?

I have an older PC with a AMD K6-2 533 chip. I vaguely remember some software that was supposed to optimize it. However, I don't remember the name of the software. Anyone have any tips on how to get the most out this CPU?

The PC currently has 128 MB PC100 SDRAM and the mobo is a DFI K6BV3+/66 Rev B+. The OS is Win98SE. I would love to put WInXP Pro on it, but I am not sure if XP will work on this PC.

My intent is use the PC as a music player with Foobar. Let me know if any additional information is needed .

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it.

I tried to install the WinXP Pro upgrade today and I ran into some problems. When it got to the section of the install where it copies files to the hard drive, I kept getting blue screens that said a file would not copy. I had the option to try again or skip. The only thing that moved me forward was choosing skip. I must have skipped 30 files before I decided to abort the install. Is there anyway to avoid or prevent this and install all the files?

Also, how slow (or fast) will XP function on my computer considering my cpu and memory? I can probably afford another stick of 128 MB SDRAM.

    Thanks!

i used to run XP Home with 128MB of PC133 RAM and it worked fine but i had a much faster CPU, so i would say upgrading the RAM to 256 MB is enough if you just want to use it as an mp3 machine

also it might help to do a clean reinstall, your problems installing may go away if you back your files up, write zeros onto your HDD, then reinstall windows98 then upgrading to XP Pro then installing the drivers and updates, etc

Yeah, I low level formated my hdd before I put XP on here. So that way it would run a bit better.

Is there a folder full of files I should copy to my hard drive so the WinXP installation disk does not have to copy them during its installation process? For example, when I install Win98, I always copied the cab files to a folder I called wincab. This sped up the installation of Win98 because it copied less from the CD-ROM and more from the hard disk.

The problem I am having with the XP install is the copying of XP files from the install CD to the hard drive. This is occuring about 30 minutes into the install... after the first reboot on installation.

    Thanks!

There are no fingerprints on the CD.

    Yes

    No

I have done everything suggested. What have I done that makes you think I am not following your advice?

The hard drive is a Western Digital. I have tried both a clean install and and an upgrade install. Both run into problems copying files, but they never do it in the same place. Clean install had fewer problems with copying files, but it refused to copy some.

I called Microsoft and they told me how to copy the install CD to the hard drive and install from the hard drive. They said my problem happens quite a bit. I am going to try that now.

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.

No, not a Compaq. It is a computer I have built out if spare parts from various PCs and upgrades. The mobo is a DFI.

    Mastertech,

Memory tested fine. HD was fine. Swamped out CD-ROM and it loaded. I got all the way through the install and it rebooted like it should.

Now I have a new problem. After the I get the Windows XP startup screen, the screen goes black and nothing happens. I let it run for 30 minutes thinking it just needed to finish some process and nothing happens.

I rebooted and the same thing happens again. Any ideas?

I gave up. I went and bought Windows 2000 Pro. It installed with no problems and is running fine.

Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it.

If Windows 2000 is working fine, then it was a compatibility issue.

    Case closed.

I think it was a compability issue. I can't figure out where it was though. I am happy with Win2000 Pro on this machine. I have WinXP Pro on two other computers in the house and they are much faster computers than the AMD K-6 that I was messing with.

Mastertech, you suggested using Everest to post a system summary. I assume I do this under the Computer tab and then Summary. I don't see any tab that shows the dates of the drivers. Sorry for the stupid question.
