alright so I'm downloading Suse 9.1 Personal right now off of linuxiso.org and I want to know how to partition it on my 80 gig maxtor hdd. I have never delt with Linux anything so this is going to be awesome (can't wait to learn...:) ). Alright so does the setup for this OS have an option to partition with my current XP pro setup or do I need to download a program to do so. Thanx for any help. I will be around probably later to provide more information if needed. :)

If you have no experience with linux, why not download knoppix. You can run it straight off a disc.

Eh, I wanna learn though. And besides, the download is already 1 hour 30 mins through. I'll go see how large the file for knoppix is though

Sorry, I was kinda vague with my post. I meant, rather than partition your drive to install something you have no experience with or don't know if you would like or not, you can start with knoppix and just run it off a cd. Then if you like it you could install another distro.

I have no experience with linux either. I'm downloading knoppix right now to see what linux is all about.

    BTW, thanks for the link.

I was dling it from the link you gave, but it slowed to a crawl.

    IHere's a whole list of mirrors - http://www.knoppix.net/get.php . I'm getting it from FSU.

Oh, yeah but don't they have multiple servers to download from on linuxiso.org? Maybe not since knoppix isn't as popular. They did for Suse though and my download is going at like 30kb/sec. What is yours at? I'll race ya,, even though Suse is bigger.

SuSE 9,1 is a good distro but doesnt come with much. Its one CD and lacks things such as a compiler and the make command (which is needed to compile programs from source).

SuSe Live CD Ive had better experience with, Knoppix wont boot on the laptop im on right now but SuSE will, Knoppix is pretty much Debian Linux.

As for partitioning, you need to shrink your windows partition. The Suse install is no bigger than 1.5 Gigs and you need about 700 Megs for swap space then leave a few gigs for software and what not. All you really need to do is I recommend shrinking your Windows partitions by about 5 GiGs, just pop in the suse cd and install. It will automatically see what you need to do, will format about 700 Megs for Swap space partition and the rest of the free space probably for ReiserFS.

Rest is pretty self explanatory, id recommend installing everything. Hopefully you dont run into any problems. Linux is definately Nice but theres not as much Corporate Driver support so you do run into some problems with hardware. If your running a AMD 64 Id definately recommend getting a 64 Bit version, supposed to be hugely faster. If your into games there are some for Linux, a few actually, UT 2004 Quake 3, Sometime soon Doom3. Its quite a learning experience and feels quite strange at first, things are different. If you got any questions feel free to ask me. I dont check here to much so if I dont response to fast ust shoot a message at techdefine.com which I check daily. I wish you luck in your learning, and welcome to the world of open source and freedom :) Once you get to know it ill let you know how to make it look nice.

    Heres my SuSE desktop Here

Nice looking desktop you have there Wookie. I like how you got your samurize setup (if it is samurize).

Thanks for the offer to help. I'm sure I'll have some questions. I'm really looking forward to learning linux.

Oh, well this is 256DSL over here. You probably have a faster DSL, or your running cable. Either way, it wasn't a fair race lol. :p
