Man I hate that stoooopid program. It will not go away.

How do I permanently turn it off. I posted awhile ago how to do it ( I cannot remember at which forum though) and I received some responses on exaclty how to do it. It even included a registry tweak that worked as well.

Recently when I restarted XP I received a message stating that stuff was changed in my startup config. Then it blasted with menu ioptions. Apparently I set something backward because that Messenger came right back up. Now, i know how to keep it from starting up in the startup config by dsabling it, but what is the more permanent fix?

Thanks. Did I say I hate that idiotic program?

    Messenger fix

Lately, I have had those messenger pop-ups and couldn't figure out why. It was annoying, since I didn't even have messenger running... but it's a different messenger than I thought. I have AOL (don't yell at me, hey! It's FREE, and been free since October of last year so I'm not complaining!)

Anyway, here is the fix, it's easy to do, and apparently it works, I haven't seen a popup since. Here's the posted article that was on AOL. (Ctrl-a, ctrl-c, ctrl-v was easier than coping just the fix itself, and I'm lazy, ok!)

Is Your PC Networked With Other Computers?
Disabling this feature of the operating system may break programs that rely on internal networking. Most home users will be unaffected.

    Who Is At Risk?
Anyone who has a connection to the Internet and who is using Windows XP/2000/98/95 with this networking feature installed.

To Disable the Messenger Service Manually:
-- Click on the Start button in the taskbar
    -- Open Control Panels
-- Go to "Administrative Tools" (XP users may need to go to "Performance and Maintenance" first, then "Administrative Tools")
    -- Double-click on "Services"
    -- Scroll down to "Messenger"
    -- Double-click on "Messenger"
-- Change the Startup type to "Disabled"
-- Click "Stop" to stop the service

    To Re-Enable Manually:
Follow the above steps, but change the Startup type to "Automatic," then click "Apply," then click "Start" under Service Status.

    Reminder:
AOL will never ask you for your password or billing information.

    Hope this helps!

Silly me, thought you meant Windows Messenger.

    To very quickly disable the Messenger service ;

    >click START
    >click RUN
    >Type in services.msc
    >scroll down to Messenger
    >double click on it
    >choose Disable, then Stop
    >exit
    >restart computer.

BTW, check on any services that you have disabled every now and then, as they like to restart at times due to new software being installed etc. Also, highly recommend exporting your services list before making any changes, just to be safe(if you can't remember what they were set to before).

    To do this, go into services.msc as before then;

    >click Action
    >click Export list
    >save where you want.

    Regards, Jade.
