I'm upgrading an HP laptop from vista home premium to windows 7 pro. I know I have to do a clean install due to incompatability of the two products, but the person who owns the laptop actually uses the factory programs that came with the laptop. How do I save and recover those after upgrade? They're there somewhere in that restore partition (I'm guessing) but I don't know how to retrieve them once I blow away the factory installed OS. Any ideas? Thanks.

You can't save and recover programs. They have to be installed.
If the person made restore/recovery disks, sometimes the maker also walks you through making a program disk (in case you need to re-install a program) and a driver disk.

The other option is to partition the drive and keep Vista and its programs intact to use as needed and use the Windows 7 partition for new programs.

If these are programs like HP Credential Manager or HP Embedded Security or the fingerprint login software from HP, this type of software can usually be found on the HP site where you find the drivers for the PC. In the list of driver types for this PC, there should be a listing called software. I think this is what you mean...

If you list the specific type of HP laptop, I will see if I can find the drivers page for you...
