sorry if this is in the wrong section...but today i got a virus which was something i havent seen before. it basically took all of my programs away and half of everything on my computer (documents, videos, etc). also there was an annoying popup that multiplied 50 times and then i believe one of those fake scanners.

what i had to do was go into safe mode and use system restore. it seemed to work so the problem isnt getting rid of the virus but instead my problem is that all my microsoft documents are gone including a 4 page paper. other documents and shit are missing as well.

i tried using a program that attempts to recover deleted files and it work (i was able to view photos from 2008 and got some videos back) but for some reason i couldnt find any microsoft documents.

i also tried using "system restore undo" but then it said my antivirus was interfering or something. i guess i should turn it off. anyway if i do this again will it bring the virus back and also my documents? currently im using another recovery program but if it fails does anyone know a reliable recovery program?

There are infections around that do not actually delete files. They just make them hidden. Thus running a program to undelete the files would not fix things like this. Try running the below.

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing?

You should not disable System Restore right now. Having even infected restore points can be better than none at all when a problem arises during the removal of malware. Yes restoring an infected restore point can reinfect you, but normally we can fix anything that you reinfect yourself with anyway. You just need to follow the guidelines was ask you to follow for getting help here. And that is, you need to run the below:

Great news, but I still recommend that you run the READ & RUN ME FIRST to be sure you are clean. Infections like the one that cause these kinds of problems can leave lots of remnants around and could even download additional malware.
