A local shop saved my laptop by installing a new hard drive. In the installation the User name (the computer) was set to HOME. For purposes of archives and data restoring, I'd like to rename HOME to the name I had previously been using. Is there a reg tweak or other means that would not break links to programs I have already reinstalled? Thanks

Now that the computer is renamed, the folder I really want to rename is in Documents and Settings. Listed is All Users, Default User, and HOME. HOME is what I want to rename to the name used on all my archives. Renaming with right click produces an error message that "This is a windows system folder and cannot be renamed or moved." Thanks.

Yes. Everything is in there. All programs, documents, settings. It is "my identity". That's why renaming is not just a right click.

Actually, no. If you remove that folder, you destroy the account. You could make a new user account first, and just delete that account and folder afterwards. Note that data would be lost, so if its critical, back it up.

Or create a new user then c/p data from that old account folder into the new folder.

Thank you all. I've gathered there is no registry tweak to rename the user profile. Sounds like establishing a new profile, copy data to the new folder and if necessary reinstall programs in that profile. Appreciate the input.
