how to repair outlook express

my friend cannot send outgoing e mails
he can recieve them but gets an error when trying to send
he has been through his internet service provider and they have determined that it is outlook express is there a way to repair outlook express or maybe an alternative to outlook if this problem cannot be resolved

This can probably be solved by reinstalling IE/OE. It would be advisable to competely remove the existing one first. The other thing you could try before you reinstall is to download the latest version of IE6/OE from the MSN website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
Hopefully the update, if needed, will do the trick

XP will not allow you to simply reinstall OE/IE.

To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.
To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

we ran the sfc /scannow and it musta found nuttin as it just went away
as far as changing the value data from 1 to 0 does this tell windows update something to reinstall or is the reinstall done from the CD

You have to reinstall online.

The value you modify is IsInstalled.
